Issue 2 / Spring 2021: Rebirth

For the second issue of Assemblage, we invited submissions that speak to the theme of Rebirth. This theme is woven throughout the artworks and art historical research below. It is applied prescriptively, derivatively, creatively, humorously, visually, loosely, and exactingly. It is at times the glimmer of hope for a new dawn of creativity and connection; at others, it is the perpetual cycle of creation and destruction. It is the strength of art against nature, the reckoning of ancient ideas in the modern world, the persistence of visual culture through peril and strife, and the rediscovery of forgotten methods and forms. Rebirth has no definite time period or methodological approach—it is a regrowth, resilience, resistance, rejuvenation, reconstruction, resurgence, response, reaction, or rejection. We are grateful to the talented authors and exceptional artists who contributed their words, visions, and time to this second issue.
